You might like the Lonely Planet travel guides, and if you are planning to stay in hostels you should invest in a Hosteling International membership, and get a ISIC card (International Student Identity Card) for great discounts. Globe Trekker is a great show on PBS, and many libraries have episodes available for checkout.
