My cat is very sensitive at the base of her tail?

Just touching, not even scratching the end of her backbone. And I 'test' it by touching around her / upper back legs. She gets very perturbed, even lashing out as if to scratch me. There are no bumps, sores, or anything. Just way too tender. Before I take her to the vet, any ideas? Anyone else been there?
